Frequently asked questions about Yoga or Asana Yoga Studio.


I'm new to Asana Yoga Studio. What do I need to know before coming to my first class?

Please arrive 10 minutes before the start of your first class so you can register. This will also give us time to get acquainted and orient you to the studio.

*Doors open 15 minutes prior to each class*

Before class, please advise the teacher of any pertinent medical conditions that we need to be aware of, including pregnancy. To avoid class disruption, please do not arrive late. The doors will be locked at class start time.


Is yoga a religion? 

No. Yoga is a philosophy that began in India an estimated 5,000 years ago. This ancient mind/body science embraces all beliefs and religions. Vinyasa yoga is a physical and psychological discipline that combines asanas (postures), pranayama (breathing) and meditation. Yoga is perhaps the only form of physical exercise that stimulates all of the body's systems.   


What about yoga mats and towels? 

The studio has a limited number of mats to borrow should you forget your mat. For hygienic reasons, we urge students to bring their own. Asana Yoga Studio is a proud distributor of Jade Yoga mats. Asana Yoga Studio does not supply towels.


What about parking?

There is street parking around the Chalet at the River and parking lots on either side of the building.


Do I need to sign-in at the studio if I reserved a spot on-line?

Yes. This helps to verify your participation in the class/workshop.

Do I have to sign up for classes online?

No, but it is strongly encouraged so that the teacher may plan accordingly. Signing up online reserves your space. We cannot guarantee that space will be available for all classes, especially with only 8 spots available for each class/workshop.


I'm new to yoga. What do I wear?

Wear comfortable form-fitting or loose-fitting workout clothes that you can move in freely. We practice with bare feet. Please take your shoes off and store them inside the shoetree before proceeding to our practice area.


Do you have a place where I can change clothes and store my belongings? 

Yes. There is a changing room in the studio. Your personal belonging may be placed in the storage area.


What about yoga etiquette?

Please turn off cell phones and pagers before entering the studio. No food or gum chewing will be permitted during classes. It is also important that all students refrain from using colognes and perfumes.


Who can practice yoga?

Almost anyone! Yoga is non-competitive. Regardless of your flexibility and strength, yoga works with your body, allowing you to discover what you are capable or while honoring your body and limitations.


What are the benefits of yoga?

The benefits are quite numerous. Yoga helps reduce stress by lowering the stress hormone, cortisol. Stress has been linked to the six leading causes of death: heart disease, cancer, lung ailments, accidents, cirrhosis of the liver and suicide. Medical research estimates up to 90% of illness and disease is stress related.


Can I eat before class? 

Yes, light snacks are optimal.  Don't eat large portions of food 1-2 hours before class.
